Building Pathways for Climate Adaptation from Technical Solutions to Implementation

Dr. Minh Nguyen is a Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO Land & Water, Australia. His expertise is on climate adaptation for engineering infrastructure, focusing on modelling construction material degradation and service life in changing climate and environment. In the recent years, he has extended his skill to sustainability science with applications in developing countries in South-East Asia. He led the CSIRO-AusAID project of Climate Adaptation through Sustainable Urban Development for water systems and environment in Can Tho, Vietnam (2010 - 2014). He recently led a project to develop a Visual Climate Adaptation Platform (VCAP) for Da Nang to build the city's resilience to natural disasters. Currently, he is leading a strategic project in collaboration with Chinese Academy of Sciences on “ Extreme Drought and Flood – A New Normal and Adaptation Pathways for an Integrated Lancang-Mekong River Basin”.

Dr. Nguyen received his civil engineer degree from HCMUT Vietnam in 1989, Master of Engineering degree from AIT Thailand in 1995, and Doctor of Engineering degree from Yokohama National University Japan in 1998. He joined CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation of Australia in 2000. He received nine national and international Awards.

In this Seminar, Dr. Nguyen will present an overview of his researches in climate adaptation and sustainable development. The presentation will demonstrate an evolution of research types from academic to that in line with the “Theory of Change”, i.e. aiming at development of pathways for research to make positive impacts in reality.
