Introduction

Abstract

Precipitation variability in the Sahel region of Africa occurs on broad range of time scales. Interannual and decadal scales of precipitation variability have been associated and may have been driven with global sea surface temperatures changes. This work investigates the mechanisms of ocean-land interaction associated with Sahel precipitation variability using the National Center for Atmospheric Research’s Community Atmosphere Model, versions 4 and 5. The models provide the ability to rigorously determine the dynamical links through examination of the impact of SST on the moisture balance over sub-Sharan Africa.
