Introduction

Abstract

Impacts of horizontal resolution on clouds and radiation are investigated using ensemble outputs of atmospheric model experiments of UK on PrACE - weather-resolving Simulations of Climate for globAL Environmental risk (UPSCALE) in three resolutions (100km, 50km, 25km grid in mid latitudes). It is found that the impact of changing resolution to global mean radiation budget is small in our model. However, systematic increase in global mean net incoming radiation is found with increasing resolution. The increase is mainly because of shortwave radiation. Analysis of clouds shows that cloud amount of optically thinner categories increases with increasing resolution but that of optically thicker categories decreases. A few hypotheses are made and are investigated.
