There is an increasing body of work suggesting that enhanced horizontal resolution helps to improve a wide range of important climate processes, but these tend to be based on one or a small number of models and simulations. It is clear that many of the most pressing questions about regional climate change urgently require advances in process simulation. For example, will the risk of high impact events such as droughts and floods change over the next few decades and beyond? The extent to which it is possible to provide robust answers to these questions relies fundamentally on the fidelity of the climate models that are used to address them. Several upcoming projects – CMIP6 HighResMIP and EU H2020-PRIMAVERA – aim to move such work into a multi-model context. The talk will describe some recent highlights of our high resolution analysis, including work on air-sea fluxes in a coupled eddy-resolving simulation, and tropical cyclone assessment and analysis, as well as future plans and potential for collaboration.
