2016 academic annual meeting of the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was held in Beijing on December 21-22, 2016. Prof. Zhenghui Xie, LASG Deputy Director presided over the opening ceremony. CAS Academician Guoxiong Wu, Xiaobo Ren Resource and Environment Department Head of the Bureau of Major R&D Programs, CAS and Riyu Lu Deputy Director of IAP respectively addressed congratulations to the meeting. They not only fully affirmed LASG’s accomplishments, but also placed higher hopes for LASG’s future development.
On behalf of LASG leading group, Director Prof. Ziniu Xiao delivered an overview report on “Work Summary of LASG in 2016”. He presented LASG major progress in scientific research and management work and proposed 2017 work plan regarding modelling development, cooperation and talents team building. Highlights of LASG in 2016 include:
1. Scientific research: LASG published 222 papers in academic journals in 2016. 153 are SCI papers, 56% of which being in journals with impact factor above 3.
2. Talents cultivation and honors: Prof. Tianjun Zhou was chosen to be a member of Ten Thousand Talents Program. Prof. Lijuan Li won the funding of National Natural Science Foundation--Outstanding Youth Foundation. Prof. Wansuo Duan was awarded Excellent Member of Youth Innovation Promotion Association, CAS. LASG high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model FAMIL R&D team won 2016 TIANHE Star Awards for Excellence Application. A large number of young scientists won various awards.
3. Internationalcooperation: LASG member attended over 100 international and domestic meetings. Chengdu International Workshop on Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the XIV LASG Climate System Model Symposium were successfully held.
The first morning saw 7 plenary talks lead by Academician Ronghui Huang and in the following branch meetings and poster sessions, attendees had active discussion about atmospheric circulation, land process and land-air interaction, ocean process and air-sea interaction, modeling development, weather and climate dynamics, convention and precipitation simulation, data assimilation and predictability.
Over 200 scientists and students attended the meeting and contributed 67 oral talks. Besides LASG members, other participants were from 30 affiliated departments of China Meteorological Administration, Institute of Oceanology, CAS, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, CAS, Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, CAS, Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Zhejing University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Beijing Normal University, Sun Yat-Sen University,Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Lanzhou University, PLA University of Science and Technology, Ocean University of China, Yunnan University, Chengdu University of Information Technology, Hunan University and overseas representatives from Haiwaii University, USA and University of British Columbia,Canada. Prior to the annual meeting, LASG Open research program assessment meeting was also held. The meetingsnot only reviewed LASG work in the past year plan, drew work plan for the coming year, but also provided a good exchange opportunity for atmospheric research community.
