Beijing, which was founded 3000 years ago, is the capital of
China. It is the political, economic, academic, and cultural
center of the country.
The long history of Beijing endows the city with a rich cultural
heritage. The Great Wall, one of the world wonders and the man-made
architectures which can be seen from space, extends several
hundred miles in Beijing. The poetic and picturesque Summer
Palace represents the highest architectural level of royal garden.
The Forbidden City includes the most splendid group of imperial
palaces in the world. The temple of heaven is the place of worship
for emperors of various dynasties of China as well as a splendid
achievement of the Chinese ancient architectural art. The above
four have been selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization as the world cultural heritage. What
is typical of Beijing is hutong (Chinese alleys) and the compound
courtyard (old Beijing residential quarters). These streets
and buildings witnessed ups and downs of the city and the people
in the past centuries and are a typical symbol of the life of
Beijing people.
Changes have taken place day by day in Beijing since China's
reform and open to the outside world. As a popular saying goes
around here, Beijing is growing taller with more and more high
buildings while younger with the people's life richer and more
colorful. Beijing is advancing rapidly with full confidence
in the 21st century.
This is Beijing, old and young, full of attraction. It is our
sincere hope that you will make the best of your time here to
visit more places and enjoy more scenery and we believe you
will harvest a lot.

Entertainment
The Assembly suggests the guests watching Jingju--the special
Chinese art genre. People usually translate "Jingju"
into "Beijing Opera", but actually "Jingju"
and operas are not identical.
Jingju is a special Chinese art genre, with a history of 200
years. It is called "the quintessence of China". Jingju
has four forms of performance: "Chang, Nian, Zuo, Da".
"Chang" resembles singing in opera, but it has a particular
tone-pattern; "Nian" resembles reading in drama, but
the pronunciations of some words are different from modern Chinese
words; "Zuo" and "Da" resembles dancing,
which uses movements to express feelings and plots. This can
help the foreign guests to understand the content of the performance.
During a Jingju performance, actors wear costumes manifest enough
to show their identity. The patterns of costumes are strictly
regulated, and wrongly dressing is absolutely forbidden; while
performing, the actor's face is colored with various patterns,
suggesting loyalty, duplicity, pulchritude, ugliness, wit or
stupidity, etc, of that role.
If you want to see a Jingju performance and you are not familiar
with it, you are adviced to go with an interpreter who knows
about Jingju.
Beijing has several theatres that remain the style of ancient
buildings that are special for Jingju performance. The theater
and the performance serve as a foil to each other, making each
other brighter and more colorful. Great Chang'an Theatre, Hu-guang
Club and Laoshe Tea House are three of the most famous ones.
